Still going....

Following in the tradition of the Pioneer and Voyager probes, NASA has extended the mission for the Mars rovers, Opportunity and Spirit, for another two years.  Man, they sure know how to build 'em, don't they?

More moons than some real planets

Some of the sharpest images of Pluto and it's three satellites, Charon, Nix, and Hydra, have been made using the Keck telescope and its adaptive optics system.  Additional images should help to determine the masses and reflectivity of the satellites.  This will be important when the New Horizons probe makes its flyby of the dwarf planet in 2015.

A true visionary

Paul Allen is well-known as a supporter of Really Cool Projects.  In addition to SpaceShipOne, he is, together with former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myrhvold, funding the development of the Allen Telescope Array which will participate in SETI full-time.  The first 42 telescopes of the array have recently been christened and the plan is to build a total of 350 dishes.  In addition to SETI, the telescope array will also be able to perform other radio-telescope activities at the same time.
